Circle Tour - From East to West
Tatla Lake
All roads except for Highway 20 are
gravel. You should be sure to check on local conditions before
embarking on your trip.
Tatla Lake is 114km west of Alexis Creek, 227km or 142 miles
west of Williams Lake. Highway 20 goes right through the middle
of the tiny community of Tatla Lake where you'll find a great
eating establishment, accommodation, a general store with
fuel, a nursing station, new school, church, and butcher shop,
along with a whole lot of history!
Tatla's beginnings were in ranching and that's very evident
as you travel through lush fields and pasture past Chilcotin
fences of various types, cattle and horses, and huge flocks
of Canada geese that love the fields in spring and fall.
You actually pass Tatla Lake itself, prior to reaching the
community but there is a forestry recreation sign on the north
side of the highway indicating the road down to the lake.
Tatla Lake is popular for its Kokanee that range from 14 to
16 inches while Martin Lake, located just north of the community
of Tatla, is popular for swimming and fishing for Rainbow
Trout.
Tatla Lake Community is actually the hub for the huge surrounding
area that includes Westbranch
and the Tatlayoko
Valley. The turnoff to those two valleys is at the junction
just before you enter Tatla.
The community members of Tatla Lake and surrounding region
are very pro-active and host and participate in a lot of events
year round including a cross country ski race, snowmobile
poker run, gymkhana, and pottery and craft fair to name a
few.
Using Tatla Lake as a jumping off point, there are an endless
number of recreational activities that you can enjoy in the
area. Locally you can go fishing, swimming, hiking, or horseback
riding or take a drive down either Westbranch Road to that
Valley, or down Tatla Lake Road to Tatlayoko Valley. You'll
meet with fabulous fishing and stunning views all the way.
Various operators offer anything from a ranch vacation, trailriding,
horse assisted hiking, wildlife viewing and just relaxing,
to mountain biking, heli-hiking, heli-kayaking, mountaineering,
canoeing, rafting, skiing and snowshoeing.

Tatla Region page. One word of caution for those travelling
highway 20 through to Tatla Lake. Cattle roam the open range
from May until the end of October and there are large numbers
on the road between Redstone and Tatla Lake, particularly
in spring and fall. Please travel at a reasonable speed and
keep a cautious eye out for them.
