Circle Tour - From East to West
Horn, Sapeye, Bluff, Middle & Twist Lakes
All roads except for Highway 20 are
gravel. You should be sure to check on local conditions before
embarking on your trip.
The turnoff to Horn, Sapeye, Bluff and Middle Lakes is 220km
or 137 miles from Williams and is located at the directional
signs just before you enter Tatla Lake. Take the Tatla Lake
Road south for about 5km where you will meet a branch in the
road. Turning left will take you to Tatlayoko Lake. Turning
right will put you on Westbranch Road. Westbranch is the term
used for this valley that is home to so many stunning lakes.
The first lake you will arrive at about 10km or 6 miles from
the fork in the road is Horn Lake. Horn Lake is a consistantly
producing lake with Rainbow Trout up to three pounds that
can be caught on a fly or by trolling.
Next in line is Sapeye Lake, which is a fly fishing lake only.
It's a very pretty lake with a view of the mountains and will
yield you Rainbow Trout of three pounds or more and Bull Trout
to six pounds. Care is suggested for large trailers as there
was no turnaround last time I checked.
Bluff Lake is just down the road from the first two lakes
called that for the road that winds along a bluff above the
lake. Caution is advised as the road can be narrow in spots.
The lake consistently produces fish all summer long with Bull
Trout to ten pounds and Rainbow Trout between two and three
pounds. There are fantastic mountain viewscapes here and loads
of wildlife.
Continuing down West Branch Valley will bring you to Middle
Lake. Due to the delicate classification as Dolly Varden habitat
Middle Lake has been restricted to motor vehicle access, but
walk in access is encouraged. Fishing for both Dolly Varden
and Rainbow trout is fantastic and there is loads of opportunity
to view wildlife. Beyond that is Twist Lake and the Homathko
Valley, but it's very difficult to get into and is recommended
for hikers only or sign up with one of the operators that
has outpost cabins on Twist Lake and they will provide trail
guide or boat transportation to the lake.
West Branch Valley offers loads of opportunity for vacation
adventure. Here you can fish, swim, canoe, kayak, go mountain
biking, hiking, see a fabulous array of wildflowers up in
the alpine, go trailriding or on pack trips into the Niut
and Pantheon Mountains, or charter the helicopter and fixed
wing operator located near Bluff Lake. That will allow you
to see the Homathko Icefield, Mt. Waddington and several other
mountain ranges, or go heli-hiking, heli-mountaineering, heli-kayaking,
heli-skiing, cross country skiing, or snowmobiling in winter.
